Kathi Smith Elected as President of the Women Lawyers of Ventura County

We are pleased to announce that our litigation attorney, Kathi Smith, has been elected as the 2015 President of Women Lawyers of Ventura County (WLVC).  Kathi served as the Program’s Chair from 2011 to 2014 for the organization. 

WLVC is a non-profit organization comprised of legal professionals and business partners who work towards furthering the aims of women and girls in society through education, social activism and networking activities.

Kathi is an experienced civil litigation attorney with a proven track record of success in trial and in settling cases. She handles litigation cases involving employment, business, real property, trademark disputes, class action defense, trust and probate, and homeowners’ association law. In addition to adeptly navigating complex litigation procedures, Kathi is well versed in the substantive law, and advises clients on how to prevent lawsuits.

Kathi also served on the Ojai Unified School District Board of Trustees from 1998 to 2014 and was a member of the Executive Board to the Ventura School Boards Association from 2008 to 2014.

Roy Schneider Selected as Citizen of the Year by the Ventura Chamber of Commerce

We are proud to announce that Roy Schneider has been selected as the Citizen of the Year by the Ventura Chamber of Commerce. Roy has been selected for his extraordinary contributions to the community, his involvement in community programs, and service on boards for non-profit organizations.

Roy is a business attorney with Schneiders & Associates, L.L.P. His areas of practice include business planning, entity formation, mergers, acquisitions and sales of businesses, employment law, contracts, transactional matters of all kinds, real estate transactions, homeowners associations, non-profit law and estate planning.

Roy graduated magna cum laude from Loyola University School of Law and received his B.A. at the University of California, Los Angeles. Upon graduation, Roy served as Counsel for Bank of America in its Los Angeles Corporate Office. He later joined an established firm in Ventura, California where he was a principal until August 2012, when Roy established his own law firm, Schneiders & Associates, L.L.P.

While maintaining his law practice, Roy founded the California College of Paralegal Studies and served as its Dean until the College was sold to a public corporation. Roy has taught Business Law at Ventura Community College for 22 years, he is currently teaching Business Law at Laverne University and was a Professor of Corporations Law at Ventura College of Law for 18 years.

Roy enjoys being active in the community and volunteering for several organizations. He serves on the board of directors of the Ventura County Medical Resource Foundation and Women’s Economic Ventures, he is a past board member of the Rubicon Theatre and is a past-president of the Ventura County Jewish Family Service.

Roy is a frequent lecturer before private and civic groups and is an instructor for SCORE of Ventura County and Women Economic Ventures and speaks regularly for their workshops on the “Legal Aspects in Starting and Operating a Business.” He also speaks routinely for the National Business Institute on “Tax Exempt Organizations from Start to Finish”.

Roy has been a resident of Ventura since 1980 and raised his family there. He has 3 children and one is a partner in the law firm and the other is the controller.

Firm Adds Experienced Patent Law Attorney

We are pleased to announce that Michael R. Shevlin, a registered patent law attorney, has joined the firm as Of Counsel. Michael’s practice focuses on intellectual property matters for corporate clients and start-up companies, including preparation and prosecution of foreign and domestic patent and trademark applications, specializing in mechanical and medical devices and the electrical and chemical arts. Michael provides counseling and opinion work including invalidity, non-infringement, and patentability to our clients. He has over twenty years of intellectual property experience providing companies a foundation upon which to grow and protect their business and the strategic planning and legal guidance to implement that growth. Michael has extensive strategic global patent prosecution and portfolio management expertise, including management of both young and mature portfolios and management of intellectual property related to core business technologies and major revenue-generating products. Michael has experience negotiating, drafting, reviewing, implementing and managing agreements related to collaborations, licenses and merger. Michael’s education and early experience as an engineer at nationally recognized companies provide him with a strong foundation for understanding varied scientific disciplines.

Prior to entering the practice of law, Michael spent over 13 years as an engineer, working on research, development and design activities in a variety of engineering disciplines in the development of new products from prototype to production. He is also a Registered Professional Engineer.

Deborah A. Perkins Receives Public Service Award from Local Bar Association

Roy is a veteran business attorney with deep knowledge of transactional and practical issues facing today’s entrepreneurs. An entrepreneur himself, Roy has extensive background in preparing business and estate successions, and has taught at undergraduate and graduate levels for many years.

Rennee R. Dehesa Selected as a Top Women in Business by the Pacific Coast Business Times

Rennee represents business clients in all aspects of business planning and operations, including start-up, employment, contracts, alcohol beverage licensing and sale of the business. Rennee also assists clients with estate planning.  In addition, she represents debtors and creditors in Chapter 7, 13 and 11 bankruptcy proceedings from inception to discharge.  Rennee is well recognized in the banking industry in representing banks’ interests in preserving their liens and in protecting their rights as creditors.

Rennee is an accomplished, bilingual attorney fluent in Spanish with a strong passion for serving her community.  She serves as a member of the Board of Directors to the Camarillo Chamber of Commerce and is currently the Chairperson of the Chamber’s Education and CI Connection Committees.  As Chair of the CI Connection Committee, Rennee serves as a liaison between the business community and California State University Channel Islands.

Rennee serves on the Board of Directors of the Ventura County Bar Association and serves as Treasurer of the Ventura County Bar Association’s Barristers and is the Chair of the Barristers Mentorship Program.  She is the past-president for the Mexican American Bar Association and is currently serving on the board of the Education Foundation of the Ventura County Mexican American Bar Association.  She is also a member of Inns of Court and Women Lawyers of Ventura County.  Additionally, Rennee has served as an Attorney Coach for the Simi Valley High School Mock Trial Team and as a volunteer with the Ventura County Family Law Self-Help Center and Casa Pacifica.

Rennee attended California Western School of Law and completed her law degree in two years (August 2006). She was on the Dean’s list each year.  Prior to attending law school, Rennee attended the University of San Diego. In 2004 she received her Bachelor of Arts degree in both Political Science and Spanish with a minor in Business Administration.

Rennee was born in Mexico City and has resided in California since the age of five.  Rennee lives in Camarillo with her husband Victor.  They enjoy spending time with family and friends, traveling, reading, and exercising.
